Transdisciplinary Design

This module challenges the assumption that architecture is a neutral service, instead positioning it as an active agent in shaping our collective futures. Together, we transcend disciplines to explore emerging methodological practices of applying design and systems thinking as critical methodologies necessary to address the complex, multi-scalar challenges of our society. It problematises the open futures of the architectural profession by shifting the focus from content silos to a fluid context which is increasingly fast, radically contingent,
and requires new ways of thinking and forms of collaboration to enable holistic approaches with a social purpose. Rather than treating architecture as the production of discrete spatial objects, the module reframes it as a relational and temporal practice shaped by interactions between space, time, value and agency.

Architecture and...

This coursework allows students to rethink how we define architectural practice as mission-driven (who we are); how we value and everage our knowledge and skills via the scope of our operations and collaborative forms of practice (what we do) and how we navigate the complex operational landscape in which architecture exists to better understand how we practice and the impact of our actions (how we do it). We set out to redefine the challenges in front of the architect / architectural practice through a transdisciplinary lens, applying systemic thinking to reconsider how we can best structure our knowledge and skills to contribute to improving our world (mission-driven vs. service-focused).

Die

Innovate or Die, proposes an innovative approach to architectural practice to disrupt current practices and drive change as a digitised business ecosystem showcasing a solid understanding of the broader legal and business context, defining financial and resource requirements, leveraging new technologies, business model innovations and creative client offerings and ultimately packaging and communicating a convincing narrative in a A5 buy-in booklet for potential investors. The focus is not only on proposing change, but making it legible, credible and actionable within real-world context.
