Evocative Architecture
The summer school aimed to explore aesthetic sustainability through the affective quality building facades have on shaping our emotional connections and the extent to which this plays a crucial role in defining our sense of place and the longevity of our buildings. The premise: we have accumulated a world of 'boring' architecture that we consistently demolish well short of its service life. In the UK, 50,000 buildings are demolished annually, generating 126 million tonnes of waste. Delivered in collaboration
To re-humanise our built environment and achieve a more empathetic perspective, it’s critical that we understand and engage with the public. Students set out to explore: how they apply to the buildings, streetscapes and urban spaces at the city, street and door scale. The propositions needed to consider three themes of visual complexity (identity), 1,000 years thinking (sustainability) and togetherness (spatial justice)?
