M1 Design Studio
The Design Studio establishes the pedagogical foundation of the MArch programme through an open and flexible framework that enables students to shape their own learning trajectory in relation to their interests, values, and modes of practice. Operating as student-practitioners, students position themselves between research and practice through self-defined pathways that engage real-world projects, practitioners, and contemporary spatial challenges.
Structured around the exploration of a self-defined wicked problem, the studio supports the development of a mission-led portfolio of projects. Through a series of conceptual, strategic, and practical design interventions, students test ideas, speculate on alternative futures, and critically engage the social, environmental, technical, legal, economic, and political conditions that shape the built environment. These conditions are approached as active drivers for design thinking and spatial agency.
